Waltonville takes 2nd at Indian Hills

MT. VERNON — At Indian Hills Golf Course Tuesday, Chelsea Knight shot a 49 to lead the lady Spartans of Waltonville, but it wasn’t enough to secure a team victory as Hamilton County edged Waltonville, 204-208, in girls high school golf action.

Woodlawn also participated in the meet and finished with a 228.

The Cardinals’ Lexi Bailey and Hamilton County’s Megan Martin each earned medalist honors after carding a 48.

After Knight, Waltonville was led by Alyssa McGovern (50), Kate Laird (54) and Bobbi Massey (55).

For Woodlawn, Kourtney Hodge and Alyssa Mullins both shot a 58, while Elecia Crider finished with a 64.

Rounding out the lady Foxes’ scores include Kirsti Auten with a 51, Maci Endicott with 52 and Natasha La Gesse with a 53.



Ellis records hole-in-one

MT. VERNON — Cyndy Ellis recorded a hole-in-one Monday at Indian Hills Golf Club in Mt. Vernon.

Ellis used a 9-iron to ace the par-3, No. 2 hole at the course.

Witnesses included Larry K. Ellis, Debbie Fitzjerrells and Matt Capps.



NFL Flag Football

Colts 45, Steelers 25

Kaden Wayer had four touchdown runs and returned an interception for a score to lead the Colts over the Steelers.

Nick Malone also had a touchdown run and interception return for a touchdown. Laten Wayer and Rusty Lowe converted on extra point runs.

Patriots 18, Dolphins 6

Mason Smith scored a touchdown in the final minutes of the game for the Dolphins, but it wasn’t enough as the Pats defeated the Dolphins.

Cowboys 56, Bears 12

The Cowboys had seven different players score touchdowns as Evan Owens, Cody Ellis, Lane Diechman, Jacob Woodrome, Weston Brockhouse, A.J. Roberts, and Jacob Dyrud all reached the end zone.

The Bears were led by two touchdown runs from Cade Morgan.

In other action, the Bengals bested the Falcons, while the Eagles shut out the Chargers, 13-0.



Hornets drop three straight

Rome found out firsthand why Carlyle is perfect on the season after the Hornets fell at home, 12-4, in grade school baseball action.

Carlyle outhit Rome, 9-3 with hits for the Hornets coming from Hayden Poninski (double), as well as singles from Gabe Frankel and Sam Storment.

The loss was Rome’s first this season.

Later, Rome dropped two more in tournament play with an 11-1 loss to Centralia and a tough 7-6 defeat from 7-6.

Leading hitters against Centralia included Poninski and Zack Swinnen, who each singled, while Patrick Bradford hit a double.

“Tough weekend for the Hornets,” stated Dennis Clark, head coach for Rome. “(We) lost all three games in the tournament. We found out that we don’t have enough pitching to face three large schools in two days and that our defense will have to get better.”

The bats were more lively against Triad as Poninski hit a single, double and a triple. Logan Issac, Frankel, Ryan Miller, and Blake Jones all singled, while Bradford added a single and a double.

Rome gets out of the tournament with a 5-3 mark.



Fifth grade Rams beat Mattoon

The fifth grade Rams defeated Mattoon, 14-6, and improved their record to 3-0 Saturday afternoon.

Both the Rams’ scores came from the air as quarterback Bradon Fitzjerrells hit tight end JaWaun Stuckey for a 30-yard score in the first quarter.

Later the tandem hooked up in the fourth quarter on a 25-yard touchdown.

Darius Johnston ran it in for the two-point conversion.

Leading tacklers were Drew Meyers, Reed Millwood and Trace Carello. Meyers and Stuckey recovered fumbles. Austin Presley had an interception late in the contest.



WC takes third at Murphysboro

Wayne City finished third in the class A cross country race at the Murphysboro Invitational Wednesday afternoon.

Jayce Smith was 10th with a time of 18:42 as the top finisher for the Indians. Joe Evans was 15th with a time of 19:22. Cody Thomason was 28th with a time of 20:28. Gage Crabtree placed 20th with a time of 19:36, while Haden Smith was 21st in a time of 20:06.



WC, Webber unable to field complete team

Both Wayne City and Webber's girls cross country teams competed at the class A Murphysboro Invitational recently, but both were unable to field complete teams at the event.

Webber had the top class A girl runner in Breanna Bergerbower, who finished first in class A and fourth overall.

For the Wayne City girls, Nicole Bradford was ninth with a time of 23:06. Torri Withrow placed 11th in a time of 23:31.
