BENTON — Mt. Vernon improved to 3-0 with a 8-1 victory over Benton in girls high school tennis action Wednesday.
The Lady Rams won five of six singles matches and all three doubles contests to secure the victory.
Chelsea Cross (8-4) at No. 1, Kylie Pickel (8-3) at No. 2, Jeanette Straeter (8-2) at No. 3, Abbey Gober (9-7) at No. 4, and Ally Adcock (8-4) at No. 6 all picked up victories for the Lady Rams.
“The match was closer than the final score,” said Mt. Vernon coach Randy Knox. “The girls showed character and determination in the close matches.
“Abbey Gober made an impressive comeback in her singles matcha after being down one game to seven where the winners is the first girl to win eight games and win by two. Abbey won the next eight games to achieve the victory. That’s what can happen if you never give up and give your best effort.”
The only loss in singles play for Mt. Vernon came from Shaelynn Tice at No. 5, who dropped a 8-5 decision.
In doubles, Mt.. Vernon’s No. 1 team of Cross and Pickel picked up an 8-1 win. The Lady Rams’ No. 2 team of Tice and Straeter won 8-6, while Gober and Adcock also earned an 8-6 win.
“Jeanette and Shaelynn were also down 5-6 before winning at No. 2 doubles,” said Knox. “It was nice to see our top three players of Chelsea, Kylie and Jeanette play well. Ally Adcock was consistent in singles and doubles.”
In JV action, Alyssa Burge, Moriah Kirkpatrick, Cassie Grove, Kayla May and Marliz Perez were all winners.
