Woodlawn wins two from Webber

WOODLAWN — It was over about as quickly as it began as Woodlawn picked up a 25-12, 25-0 win over Webber in high school volleyball action Thursday in Woodlawn.

The Lady Cardinals' JV team also won and their highlight ended up being junior Tasha Kurwicki, who served all available points for Woodlawn in a 25-0, 25-0 victory.

Later in the varsity match — after Woodlawn captured Game 1 — Jonah Frick stepped to the serving line and delivered all 25 points for the win.

"That's unbelievable," said Angie Cheatham. "I'm very, very proud of Tasha and Jonah, and really all the girls tonight. I don't think we could have played any better.

"Her team was behind her when they did return the ball. Basically JV we had perfect games, so it's awesome."

Lindsey Fisher led Woodlawn with eight kills, four aces and one block. Mallory Hapeman picked up five kills.

Kelsie Blue had eight assists, while Kinzie Verhines picked up two.

"I'm really happy with our performance tonight," said Cheatham. "Lindsey had a lot of kills and Mallory Hapeman had a lot of kills. My setters did a good job. The serving was awesome; JV and varsity.

"Jonah served the whole second game and Tasha Kurwicki served 49 straight points and had every point. I'm really proud of our performance tonight and it's encouraging."

For Lady Trojans' volleyball coach Erin Weber, the performance was disappointing, to say the least.

"They've been playing good, they just didn't play as a team tonight," said Weber. "I wish I knew why. Day-to-day they're playing more like a team and more-and-more like how I want them to play like. Had a break, came back tonight and everything kind of just fell apart."

Leah Sutton had one kill. Tasha Kurwicki finished with an ace and nine service points.

Jonah Frick was 25 of 25 serving (all in Game 2) and had seven aces.

"I think it's sometimes hard to get the momentum going when you know it's not a high energy game," said Cheatham. "I think they were somewhat going through the motions a little bit, but for the most part did what they had to do to win."

Webber (0-4) will compete Saturday at the Massac Co. Invitational, while Woodlawn improves to 3-8 and will face Noble (West Richland) next Tuesday.
