Frosh Rams rally past Carbondale

MT. VERNON — The Mt. Vernon freshman football team evened its record at 3-3 on Saturday with a 36-30 win at home against Carbondale.

The win came after the Terriers had opened a 14-0 lead early in the first quarter.

Anthony Moore scored on a 22-yard run to give the Rams’ their first six points, but the 2-point attempt failed. A bad snap on a punt attempt by Carbondale gave Mt. Vernon good field position in the red zone, and the Rams capitalized as Darius Box hit Wes Brumley for a 17-yard TD pass.

Blake Stricklin ran in the 2-point conversion attempt to knot the score at 14.

Brumley recovered a Carbondale fumble and returned it to the Terriers’ 10-yard line, but the Rams were flagged three times for illegal procedure and the score remained tied at 14 at halftime.

Moore scored on a 5-yard run and Zack Jones ran in the conversion to give Mt. Vernon a 22-14 lead in the third quarter. The Terriers countered with a touchdown and conversion to send both teams into the fourth quarter knotted at 22.

A 65-yard run by Stricklin, who also ran in the 2-point conversion, gave the Rams the lead for good at 30-22. The Mt. Vernon defense stopped the Terriers on consecutive possessions before the Rams strung together a 70-yard scoring drive that culminated with a 5-yard touchdown run by Ryan Gibson.

The touchdown gave Mt. Vernon a 36-22 lead with just less than three minutes left in the game, and Carbondale closed to within six on a lengthy drive that ended with 45 seconds left on the clock.

Kaleb Jones recovered an onside kick for the Rams to seal the win.

Mt. Vernon plays at unbeaten Cahokia 10 a.m. Saturday.
