JV Lady Rams see first action of year

CAHOKIA — The Mt. Vernon Lady Rams’ junior varsity basketball team saw its first competitive action on Monday and according to JV coach Jeff Lonnon, it showed.

The Lady Rams struggled with Cahokia’s speed and athleticism as the Comanches scored a 61-42 victory to drop Mt. Vernon to 0-1 on the season.

“This is really the first live competition against an opponent they’ve seen,” said Lonnon. “I thought Cahokia was kind of a tough draw for them because they were quicker and pretty athletic and it was a tough draw for them to start out the season.”

Another problem Mt. Vernon ran into was Fredricka Walker, who had her way in the post and finished with a game-high 24 points on 10 field goals and 4 of 9 shooting from the free throw line.

“I think the youth of our team really showed,” Lonnon said. “We’ve got a lot of freshmen out there and a few sophomores.

“I really thought it was [a] good [experience] because I don’t think they had any concept of the speed and athleticism they got thrown at them tonight.

“Even though we lost, that part of it was good for our freshmen to see.”

Alaina Reeves scored nine points to lead the Lady Rams. She scored six points in the first quarter and tallied 3 of 10 field goals in the loss. Cheyenne Piper and Meridith Slater each finished with seven points.

The JV Lady Rams will play their first home game Thursday against Effingham St. Anthony.
