Pins help Rams edge Mascoutah

MASCOUTAH — The Mt. Vernon wrestling team scored a narrow victory over Mascoutah on Tuesday, 36-34, to improve to 1-1 on the season.

The Rams won half of the 14 matches, but five of those were by either pinfall or submission.

Alex Miller won at 112 points with a pin of Andrew White in 25 seconds. Later, Blake Stricklin pinned William Burns at the 3:44 mark at the 135 pound class. Lastly, Blake Fields was a winner after pinning Lawrence Bass in one minute, five seconds at 285 pounds.

Chris Kendrick was a 13-12 winner in his 140 pound match with Brandon Maurer. Torrey Pollard won at 189 pounds with a 15-14 victory over Derrick Issler.

Winners by forfeit for the Rams included BreAn Carlton (103) and Dustin Cole at 215 pounds. The Rams' JV team beat Mascoutah, 39-9. Winners for Mt. Vernon included Kriston Ruiz, David Brazell, Chase Cavender, Nick Torrez, Alex Laur, Melvin Martin, Mike Sauls and Brady Rose. The varsity team will travel to Bethalto Saturday for the 16 team Civic Memorial Tournament. The freshmen/sophomores will travel to Carbondale for the Carbondale freshman/sophomore Open.
