Lady Rams triumph over Triad

MT. VERNON — A two week layoff didn't stop the Lady Rams basketball team Saturday afternoon against Triad.

Mt. Vernon exited the extended winter break with a 46-32 win.

It was a good game for us defensively, we're still struggling to score,” Mt. Vernon coach Jeff Lonnon said.

Clare Ryan led the Lady Rams with 19 points and provided some critical offense late in the game.

We called some things for Clare today, and she converted almost every single time,” Lonnon said.

Mt. Vernon maintained a double-digit lead throughout the game, but Triad chipped the deficit down to seven midway through the fourth quarter.

Ryan responded with back-to-back buckets to push the Lady Rams edge up to 43-32.

Triad never threatened again.

Hannah Owens recorded a double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The junior post player racked up eight boards in the opening half and three on the offensive end.

I thought she took a beating in there and played exceptionally well in there considering the beating that she got,” Lonnon said.

Mt. Vernon started strong with a 7-0 surge to start the game. Courtney Scarbrough ended the opening quarter with a bucket to push Mt. Vernon's lead to 15-5.

Ryan helped the Lady Rams double up the Lady Knights at 30-15 early in the third quarter. Mt. Vernon's biggest lead of the game came at 37-21 later in the quarter.

Miriam Hester added a solid contribution of four points and six rebounds off the bench for the Lady Rams.

Mt. Vernon is 7-4 this season.

It was a nice team win,” Lonnon said. “We knocked some rust off today. I thought that we made some uncharacteristic turnovers because I think I attribute that to the big layoff.”

Mt. Vernon's junior varsity team was also victorious 33-28 in overtime to improve to 4-1 this season.
