Young Rams open today

MT. VERNON — The Rams track team will have a young squad looking to build its experience as they open the outdoor season.

“In terms of being young and with a small (senior) class like that, we really don’t have the depth that I’ve had on the team in the last two or three years,” Mt. Vernon coach Clint Turner said. “We like to have a good stable of sprinters and hurdlers and jumpers. We don’t really have what I would call the stable.”

Mt. Vernon lost one of its top track performers in recent history to graduation. Spencer Allen now competes for Georgia Tech.

Karson Hahn and Steve Boss are two returning seniors with experience. Jake Wilson, a distance runner, is another senior back for the Rams but is currently injured. Hahn consistently runs the 800 meters and registered a pair of top five finishes during the indoor season.

“He’s really shown that he’s spot on and ready to go,” Turner said. “I think he’s going to score a lot of points for us, run a lot of good races. I may jump him up in the mile some.”

Other contributing seniors are Josh Brinson and Xavies Mooney.

The team is stacked with juniors this season. Joseph McDaniel replaces state qualifier Trace Turner as the team’s top pole vaulter.

“He’s done a lot of the work that he needs to do to be a good pole vaulter,” the Rams coach said. “He’s now leading a young group of kids.”

Jordan Wilemon and David Modert, a mile state qualifier, return and will compete in distance events along with Crayton Turner. Nic Meyer will compete in shot put and discus for the Rams. Robert Grider brings speed to the sprints.

“(Grider) really came on last year as a sophomore late in the year with a lot of the big invitationals started making the finals in the 200,” Turner said.
