Rend Lake advances to tonight's title game

DANVILLE — The Rend Lake College mens basketball team advanced to the championship game of the NJCAA Division II National Tournament with an 80-75 win in Friday’s semifinal against Owens Community College.

Jeril Taylor led Rend Lake with 19 points. Woodlawn graduate Bronson Verhines finished with 17 points and nine rebounds. He hit eight of his 13 attempts from the field. His brother, Dawson, added seven points and four assists. Trice Whaley was also in double figures for the Warriors with 12 points.

The Warriors dominated the game in the paint and off the bench. Rend Lake outscored Owens 48-12 in the paint. The Warriors bench built a 39-20 edge.

Owens took a 35-32 lead into halftime before Rend Lake erased the deficit in the second half.

The Warriors face the winner of the Brown Mackie-Moraine Valley matchup in the title game at 7:30 p.m. tonight.

The public is invited to ride with Rend Lake College to tonight’s game.

The ride to the game is free but seating is limited. Individuals who are interested can call or text their name to (618) 218-8676 by 11 a.m. Saturday.

The bus will leave at 1 p.m. today outside Waugh Gym on the RLC campus in Ina.

    On Thursday close to three dozen sophomores, juniors and seniors traveled to Southern Illinois University in Carbondale for a football team camp. The camp, which included three other high schools, wrapped up Saturday.
