Rams catcher signs with Lindenwood

---- — MT. VERNON – The Rams baseball team already has several players committed to colleges.

Collin Young added to the list when he signed with Belleville’s Lindenwood University.

“I ended up taking a visit there a couple weeks ago, and I really liked the school,” Young said.

The senior starts at catcher for the Rams and has hit in the No. 3 spot in the order for the team.

“Collin loves the game and playing college baseball has always been a dream of his,” Mt. Vernon coach Tim Holloway said. “We’re extremely happy for him and his family that he has this opportunity.”

A season ago as a junior Young had a .250 batting average in 100 at-bats. He had nine RBI and a .361 on-base percentage.

His numbers have increased at the start of his final season. He had a .364 batting average and .562 on-base percentage through the opening five games of the season.

One of Young’s best assets is his abilities in the field as a catcher. He said he takes pride in being able to prevent passed balls and wild pitches.

“We have been fortunate to have some very good catchers, and Collin is as good of a skilled catcher as is around here in my opinion,” Holloway said. “He’s a very good blocker. He’s a very good receiver. He’s got a strong, accurate arm.”

Communication between a pitcher and catcher is also a key part of the game.

“It’s been a fun process getting to work with the pitchers, figure out what they like to throw, when they like to throw it, how to react,” Young said. “You also learn how to help them out out there on the mound.”

Young played a key role in a Rams team that finished 26-10 a season ago and dominated the South Seven Conference with a perfect 10-0 season.

The Lynx are an NAIA program and finished 20-25 overall last season.
