---- — Lady Rams winthriller in Benton

Kelby Kujawa knocked in the winning run in a 5-4 win for Mt. Vernon over Benton on Thursday.

The game went nine innings, and was the second straight victory for the Lady Rams.

Mt. Vernon erased a 3-0 deficit in the game. The rally started in the sixth with a triple off the bat of Page Clinton. Kujawa knocked her in to close the gap to 3-1. Still in the sixth, Haley Lockhart made the score 3-2 with an RBI double.

Mt. Vernon knotted the score in the top of the seventh. Clinton knocked an RBI double.

Summer Hobson put Mt. Vernon up 4-3 in the eighth with an RBI single that plated Lauren Wilson.

Benton tied the game at four in the bottom of the eighth before Kujawa’s hit pushed the Lady Rams back in front in the ninth.

Hannah Wright pitched the final four innings and was the winning pitcher. Wright finished with three strikeouts and one walk. Haley Chelf started the game and threw three and a third innings. She didn’t allow an earned run and had one strikeout.

Clinton finished the game with four hits and an RBI. Lockhart had two hits and an RBI. Kujawa added two hits and two RBI. Hobson finished with a hit and an RBI.

Hannah Wright, Rachel Wright, Wilson and Alexis Stewart all had a hit each.

Mt. Vernon is 8-12 overall this season and travels to the Triad Tournament starting today. The Lady Rams open action at 2 p.m. against Belleville West.

Rams game suspended after five innings

Mt. Vernon’s baseball game at Althoff was halted after five innings due to poor weather on Thursday.

The game was tied 2-2 when the game was stopped.

The schools have not ruled out continuing the game from the six inning on at some point before the end of the regular season, according to Mt. Vernon baseball coach Tim Holloway.

The Rams can clinch the South Seven Conference title with a victory at Centralia on Tuesday. A loss by the Rams in the Centralia game would mean the game would definitely have to be completed.

Effingham edges Mt. Vernon in tennis

Mt. Vernon’s boys tennis team lost 5-4 against Effingham on Thursday.

The Rams took a 4-2 lead after the singles matches, but Effingham swept the doubles matchups to win.

Aaron Neibert, Aaron Burge, Brandon Nabors and Cody Wilson were all winners for Mt. Vernon in singles.

Hall of Fame to hold golf outing

The Mt. Vernon Township High School Sports Hall of Fame is holding a golf outing this month.

The outing will be Saturday, May 18, at Green Hills Country Club. The money from the fundraiser will go toward the Hall’s induction ceremonies.

Lady Devils win conference title

The Sesser-Valier/Waltonville girls track team won the top spot at its conference meet.

The Lady Devils finished with 68 points.

Chelsea Miller won the 100 meters (12.50 seconds), 200 meters (25.65 seconds) and long jump (16 feet, eight inches)

Other top finishes were: Emily VanDeveer in the high jump (four feet, eight inches) and Rae Lappin in the triple jump (33 feet, eight and three quarters inches).

The 800 meter relay team of Lappin, Savannah Boles, Michelle Ort and VanDeveer finished second (1:56).
