Mt. Vernon’s baseball team traveled to Edwardsville and won 6-3 Wednesday.
Tyler Ellis was the winning pitcher and finished with six strikeouts in the game. He allowed three earned runs.
“Tyler Ellis had a great outing,” Mt. Vernon coach Tim Holloway said. “(He) located three pitches for strikes, kept them guessing and got out of some jams.”
Landon Thomas earned the save.
Colten Meador helped the Rams get off to a quick start with an inside the park homer in the opening inning. Meador knocked the ball into right-center field and raced all the way home when the outfielders collided.
Trevor Flota added two hits and three stolen bases. Jake Pike had a hit.
Mt. Vernon stole seven bases in the game.
The Rams improved to 25-7-1 this season and host Highland for a doubleheader on Saturday. Edwardsville dropped to 25-9.
“It was just a good all around day where we had some big hits,” Holloway said. “Everything that we did worked today.”
Carbondale ends Lady Rams soccer season
Mt. Vernon’s girls soccer team lost 6-1 to Carbondale in the opening round of the Marion regional Wednesday.
Carbondale took a 2-0 lead into halftime and added four second-half scores.
Whitney Warner scored Mt. Vernon’s only goal of the game with about 10 minutes left.
After the game, coach Jeff Harrison announced he was stepping down as head coach of the soccer program. He spent 18 seasons as assistant and head coach of the boys and girls teams.
Webber, Woodlawn to face in regional final
Webber and Woodlawn’s baseball teams will face off for the 1A regional title on Saturday.
Both teams won their semifinal matchups on Wednesday.
Webber beat Thompsonville 4-1.
Jordan Wheeler threw a complete game for the Trojans.
Alex Lynn had two hits and three RBI. Levi Aydt and Logan Gaineany both had a double each. Gage Raudenbush added an RBI groundout.
Woodlawn topped Norris City/Omaha/Enfield 3-2.
Logan Isaac earned the win in relief of Matt Kennedy, who pitched five and two-thirds innings.
Bryson Sanders delivered a two-run single in the sixth that was the game-winning hit for Woodlawn.
Webber and Woodlawn meet for the title at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Seeds announced for tennis sectional
The Mt. Vernon’s boys tennis team will have a singles player and doubles team in the top six for Friday’s sectional.
Aaron Neibert enters the sectional as a No. 3 seed. The team of Cody Wilson and Jared Hatton are a No. 6 in doubles.
Nathan Arnold along with the doubles team of Aaron Burge and Brandon Nabors are unseeded.
Friday’s sectional starts at 1 p.m. Players and teams that advance to Saturday’s semifinal qualify for state.
Woodlawn downs Webber softball
Woodlawn’s softball team won its opening round regional game 16-1 against Webber on Tuesday.
Carly Ethridge was the winning pitcher and thew four innings. She finished with seven strikeouts.
Cassandra Lueking had four hits, including a home run, and two RBI. Ryann French added four hits and three RBI. Kelsea Bock adde a hit and two RBI.
Woodlawn is 16-11 and plays in Saturday’s regional final at 11 a.m. against Wayne City or Odin.
