School board puts budget on public display

MT VERNON – The Mt. Vernon Township Board of Education Monday voted to place the district's tentative amended budget for 2013 on public display for 30 days.

Superintendent Mike Smith explained that changes may still be made to the document, which at this point is very similar to the budget that was filed last September.

Board members Monday did not discuss specifics related to the budget. In June, school officials will have a better idea if the budget will come in over or under current projections, said Board President Carl Miller.

A public hearing on the budget is set for 7 p.m. June 20 and a special school board meeting to adopt the budget will be held at 7:15 p.m. that same evening.

The school board Monday also approved entering into a one-year contract with QNS for the agency to continue to upgrade and manage the district's computer network.

This action item prompted an in-depth discussion on how far the district has advanced technologically in recent years.

Currently, the district is utilizing 70 Smart Boards in its classrooms and the overall bandwidth has increased dramatically over the last several years.

“We push technology a great deal,” said assistant high school principal Robert Knutson. “(We've) improved the network tremendously.”

The ongoing contract with QNS has been a key part of the district's advancements, Smith said.

“It's truly been a win-win partnership,” Smith said.

The school board went into closed session Monday night to discuss employment matters. The session was still ongoing as of press time.

In other business Monday, the school board:

u Heard a report from the High School Marching Band on a recent performance at Disney World in Florida.

u Approved a five-year agreement with GFI Digital Inc. for copier services.

u Approved a second consideration of policy updates from the Illinois Association of School Boards.

u Approved several Student/Athletic Handbook revisions.
