---- — CHARLESTON – Mt. Vernon's Aaliyah Palmer ended her girls track career as a record holder.

Palmer hurled the shot put 39 feet, 11 inches at the 2A state finals this weekend. Previously, Palmer had tied the school record with a throw of 39 feet, six inches. The record-setting throw came in the preliminary round. Competitors can use their longest throw in the prelims or final round.

The throw led to a fifth-place finish for the Lady Rams senior.

“It was really exciting to have her in her fourth year to have her best throw and then to break that school record,” Mt. Vernon coach Connie Harre-Blair said.

Palmer also competed in the discus. Her longest throw was 112 feet, 10 inches. She finished 10th in the event.

“To come out and be 10th at the state, she should be real proud of herself,” Harre-Blair said. “I'm real proud of her that she could put those two days together and to have that good of a finish to her season and to her career.”

Palmer entered the state final for a second straight season. She won the discus at the Triad sectional and was fifth in the shot put.
