Lady Cardinals fall to Carmi

WOODLAWN — The Lady Cardinals put themselves in position to beat Carmi-White County but couldn't pull off the victory Saturday night.

Carmi won the game 34-32.

Woodlawn tied the game with less than a minute to go on a bucket from Kerstie Harlow. She was fouled but missed the free throw.

Carmi took possession and worked an opening for Bailey Winters, who drained a shot near the baseline to put the Lady Bulldogs up 34-32.

Woodlawn called for time and set up a final play with two second left in the game.

We fought back hard, and we got a real good move from Harlow to get that bucket in tight and had a free throw for the lead,” Woodlawn coach Matt Patterson said. “We really didn't do anything wrong in the last possession. I thought we played pretty good (defense), and she got open and hit a shot.”

The Lady Cardinals tried to inbound the ball to Carly Etheridge at midcourt, but the pass sailed over her head. Carmi intercepted the ball and time expired.

We were just trying to get the ball to the center line,” Patterson said. “And we had some cutters coming off both sides, seeing if we could hit somebody on the move. That's not a play you practice every day, and we tried to draw it up in a 30-second timeout.”

Lexy Knox and Kiara Lueking led Woodlawn with seven points each. Knox led the team with eight rebounds. Bailey Winters and Briley Attebury both tallied eight points each to lead Carmi-White County.

Woodlawn trailed throughout the game but stayed close. Taytum Murdock tied the game at 17 midway through the second quarter, but Carmi eased to a 22-20 edge at halftime.

Carmi clawed its way to a 29-22 edge with three minutes left in the third quarter. The margin marked the biggest advantage of the game for the Lady Bulldogs after taking a 13-6 lead in the first.
