The Lady Devils never trailed and were never threatened against Trico on Wednesday night.
Sesser-Valier/Waltonville ended with a 44-19 win and remain undefeated this season.
“It was a sluggish win,” Sesser-Valier/Waltonville coach Rick Metcalf said. “It's finals week. We've got finals today and the next day. The girls are studying before the game. We have three games on finals week.”
A trio of Lady Devils were in double figures Wednesday. Rachel Marlo led SVW with 16 points. Cheyenne Pitchford and Mikala Williams both added 10 each. Pitchford finished with seven rebounds.
“Who are you going to concentrate on?,” Metcalf said. “Because every night we have a different leading scorer.”
SVW took control from the tipoff and scored the opening seven points. Trico cut the deficit to 9-4 at the quarter break.
“They're a very good team, and they play good defense,” Trico coach Heather Hochmuth said. “They beat us. They deserved to win the ballgame.”
Pitchford pushed the Lady Devils lead to double digits at 15-5 with 3:25 left in the half after a layup. Williams knocked down a baseline jumper just before halftime to extend the Lady Devils edge to 23-7.
SVW's offense started sluggish in the second half. Maty Garner gave the Lady Devils a bucket with 6:15 left in the third. SVW didn't score again until Pitchford hit a shot with less than two minutes left in the quarter.
Throughout the game, SVW's defense was able to force Trico into mistakes. The Lady Pioneers ended the game with 21 turnovers. Several turned into transition baskets for the Lady Devils.
“We wanted to pick up the pace so we started trapping a little bit, trying to get something going,” Metcalf said.
The Lady Devils are 9-0 overall this season and 2-0 in Black Diamond Conference play. Trico dropped to 2-5 overall. The Lady Devils travel to Zeigler-Royalton tonight.
