Rams schedule finalized

MT. VERNON —

The opponents for the Rams upcoming football season will stay the same.

The IHSA recently released football schedules for every team in the state.

Mt. Vernon opens the year with a trio of non-conference opponents (Rochester, Mascoutah and Triad).

The Rams start their South Seven Conference season in week four against state runner-up Belleville Althoff. Mt. Vernon ends the regular season with a home game against Mt. Carmel.

Rochester enters the opening week of the season after winning three straight state titles.

Of Mt. Vernon's nine games, they will play at home against Triad, Marion, Carbondale and Mt. Carmel with trips to Rochester, Mascoutah, Althoff, Cahokia and Centralia.

The inclusion of Cahokia on the schedule comes after several months of speculation about the future of the school's sports teams.

In April, the school approved cuts in extracurricular activities that included sports. The move was connected to the $1.2 million the district was waiting to receive from the state. Although just two weeks ago, the district announced plans to close two schools to spare sports, other activities and teaching jobs.

The Rams opponents had a combined 60-34 overall record a season ago. All games will start at 7 p.m. each Friday night.
