Centralia edges Lady Rams tennis

MT. VERNON —

The difference came in the doubles for the Lady Rams match against Centralia on Thursday.

After a split in singles, the Annies took two crucial doubles matches to secure a 5-4 win.

They're an excellent doubles team,” Mt. Vernon coach Randy Knox said. “I knew it was going to be difficult for us to win two out of three doubles.

They're really strong in that area.”

Catie Raney (6-0, 0-6, 4-6), Shubhika Jain (3-6, 2-6) and Gauri Kaushal (2-6, 3-6) all lost in singles.

Amanda Scott was a winner at No. 4 6-2, 6-4. Liz Hurst was a winner at No. 5 singles 6-4, 3-6, 7-5). No. 6 singles player Abigail Winkler was also victorious 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

I was happy with the way we competed,” Knox said. “I thought our girls played very well. They gave great effort. That's all I can ask for.”

Mt. Vernon No. 3 doubles team of Jain and Hurst won 7-6, 7-6.

Raney and Kaushal lost 3-6, 2-6. Scott and Winkler were defeated 4-6, 4-6.

We knew this was going to be a real tough match for us,” Knox said. “We knew they had an excellent team and well coached.

I thought the effort was there and (I'm) real proud of them. They just were a little bit better than us tonight.”

Mt. Vernon is 11-1 this season and travels to Benton on Monday before a home match Tuesday against Carmi.
