MT. VERNON —
Brock Fulkerson helped the Rams baseball team to the state finals last spring, and this weekend he committed to Rend Lake College.
“It's great to see another one of our guys have the opportunity to chase his dream,” Mt. Vernon coach Tim Holloway said. “And Rend Lake is a great place for Brock.”
Fulkerson finished a glittering junior season that included an all-state team honor. The Mt. Vernon pitcher will sign with the college in January, Holloway said.
He won 11 games for a Mt. Vernon team that finished the year 31-10-1 and placed fourth at the 3A state finals.
“Brock locates with movement. He's a strike thrower,” Holloway said. “He has good mechanics. He's poised. He has the mental makeup, and the only thing he lacks is the physical maturity. Rend Lake is the perfect place for him, and he's only going to get better.”
Fulkerson threw 89 and a third innings and had an earned run average of 1.96. Holloway said the lanky hurler has put some extra velocity on his fastball during the offseason.
“He's kind of been under the radar, but I've seen his velocity come up four or five miles an hour already this fall from last spring early summer.”
Fulkerson joins a lengthy list of Mt. Vernon baseball players who have committed to the college. Last season former Rams Blake Deaton, Zack Jones played for Rend Lake. The roster this season includes Landon Thomas, Clayton Reeves, Tyler Ellis and Colton Meador. Each started for the Rams during their state final run.
