Lady Cardinals fall in sectional

Finish season 17-8

LEBANON —

It was fitting Tuesday's sectional semifinal game came down to the final points.

Woodlawn and Lebanon battled back and forth throughout the volleyball contest, but the Lady Greyhounds claimed the final few points and the victory.

Lebanon won the three-game match 19-25, 25-12, 25-23.

I'm upset because, of course we lost, but I thought my girls played awesome,” Woodlawn coach Sara Lamczyk said.

The decisive game hinged on the last few points. The two teams were tied at 22. Lebanon seized a 24-22 edge after Annie Wehrheim was called for a carrying violation. Woodlawn scored the next point to close the gap to 24-23, but Lebanon's Daisy Cornell finished the match with a kill.

There were a few little mistakes, but that was a good team that came at us,” Lamczyk said. “But I think my girls did awesome so I was very proud of them. It was a good game.”

Lebanon's Malory Schmitt finished with 18 kills.

Wehrheim led the Lady Cardinals with 16 kills. Ryann French finished with nine, and Hannah Bock ended with six.

Bock and Wehrheim owned the area near the net in the opening game. Both players provided an offensive and defensive presence against Lebanon. The two combined for eight kills and five blocks in the opener. The domination helped Woodlawn win the opening game.

Hannah kind of came out of nowhere,” Lamczyk said. “People don't always see her, and she played awesome and I'm so proud of all of them.”

The Lady Cardinals trailed early before the two started dominating. Down 12-9, the duo sustained a run that helped Woodlawn take a 16-12 edge.

French started the spurt with a kill. Wehrheim followed with a kill and a block. Then Bock blocked an attempt and recorded back-to-back kills.

Lebanon threatened but never recovered.

The Lady Greyhounds bounced back in the second game.
