Rams rally past Herrin

Finish with six pins

MT. VERNON —

The Rams wrestling team fought back from a big deficit to beat Herrin 46-34 Thursday night.

Brandon Rutherford clinched the victory for the Rams in the penultimate match at 145 pounds. He recorded a pin with 36 seconds left in the second period against his opponent. The victory gave the Rams a 40-34 cushion.

(Rutherford) has been in the battles for years, and he knows what he needs to do,” Mt. Vernon coach Sean Docherty said. “And he's adjusting now to high school wrestling really well.”

Rutherford's pin was one of six in the match for the Rams.

Herrin started quickly against the Rams, building a 22-0 lead after the opening four contests.

We're still working out our lineup,” Docherty said. “We're still getting kids where they need to be weight-wise, and we're still learning. It's a process that's going to be ongoing throughout the season. Getting down like that was kind of rough. Hopkins being able to get the win, a major decision there, helped get us started.”

Alex Hopkins put the Rams on the scoreboard when he scored a major decision at 220 pounds. The victory cut the deficit to 22-4.

Mt. Vernon seized momentum with three quick pins in the next matches. Tristan Penrod (285 pounds), Thomas Vosburgh (106) and Josiah Fitzjerrells (113) all pinned their opponents within 25 seconds. The trio of pins tied the score at 22.

We just started rolling there in our lighter weights, which in the last couple years has really been our strength,” Docherty said.

Mt. Vernon's Quentin Favors won with a Herrin forfeit at 120 pounds. The Rams went back to their wins by pins ways when Matthew Costello (126) and Rolando Schmitt (132) flattened their opponents.

After Rutherford's victory, Mt. Vernon earned another forfeit victory at 152 pounds where Chase Vosburgh was waiting to compete.

Mt. Vernon is 4-3 in dual matches this season.
