Mater Dei drops Woodlawn

By Paul Hines

BREESE — Mater Dei used a dominating inside-outside combination to beat Woodlawn's boys basketball team 62-36 Saturday night.

They played very well. They played outstanding,” Woodlawn coach Shane Witzel said. “They're been playing really well as of late, and they continued it tonight.

We got beat in all fazes of the game.”

Mater Dei never trailed in the game and started with a 12-3 run in the opening quarter.

The Knights used a combination of potent outside shooting that rang up eight 3-pointers and superior size in the post area. The Knights had a pair of post players – Eric Vandeloo (6-5) and Nolan Gerling (6-8) – who created problems for Woodlawn's defense. The pair teamed for 14 points and nine rebounds in the game.

When they shoot it as well as they did from the perimeter with the inside game they have, they will be very difficult to beat.”

Chase Phelps led Woodlawn with 12 points. Jake Robinson added eight.

Mater Dei unsettled Woodlawn's offense throughout the game with its pressure and zone defense along with its size. Woodlawn shot 14 of 42 from the field, and the Knights owned the boards with a 28-15 advantage.

I felt like our effort was pretty good, for the most part we competed hard,” Witzel said. “And we contested shots to some degree. It's just difficult to guard an inside-outside game.”

After the early run, Mater Dei padded its lead throughout the game. The Knights took a 22-7 edge after the first period, and cruised to a 37-20 halftime lead. The margin ballooned to 30 points in the final quarter.

There's not really any positive that comes from this minus the fact that we can't simulate the kind of size they have so in a sense that's good that we see that, and I felt like we did a little better attacking their zone as the game went on,” Witzel said.

Woodlawn is 12-2 this season and begins Midland Trail Conference Tournament play at 7 p.m. tonight.
