Rams hammer Civic Memorial

MT. VERNON — The Rams baseball team cranked up its offense for the third time this week.

This time the victim was Civic Memorial as Mt. Vernon won the game 10-0 in five innings. A trio of Rams’ hitters powered the offense in Thursday’s game. Matthew Williams, Colten Meador and Landon Thomas all had two hits and two RBI each in the game.

“It’s always good to score first, and then you’re able to put a lot of pressure on them,” Mt. Vernon coach Tim Holloway said. “And we did a good job today. Today was one of those days where everything worked.”

Mt. Vernon scored two runs in each of the opening two innings of action before breaking the contest wide open with four more in the fourth. Already up 4-0, Pat Bradford scored after a Civic Memorial error. Clayton Reeves cracked an RBI double down the left field line to give the Rams a 6-0 edge. Jake Pike and Williams ended the fourth inning scoring with RBI singles.

Thomas ended the game early in the fifth when he sent a shot into the right field gap that plated Williams and Pike.

A pair of Mt. Vernon pitchers combined on a one-hit shutout. Thomas started the game on the mound and hurled four innings. The senior finished with three strikeouts and two walks. Sawyer Harrison finished the game on the hill for the Rams.

“(Thomas) has gained strength and velocity the past year,” Holloway said. “What I saw today and what I’ve seen in his bullpens I think he’s going to be a solid addition to our staff.”

The Rams are 3-0 this season and travel to Triad on Tuesday. Mt. Vernon has outscored its opponents 35-2 in the opening three contests this season.

“We’ve swung the bat well,” Holloway said. “I think a lot of it is experience. If you look back through history, a lot of guys numbers jump as they go from a junior to a senior. And we’ve got a lot of seniors.”
