Fulkerson gives Rams strong outing

MT. VERNON - Brock Fulkerson gave the Rams another strong outing on the mound in an 8-2 Wednesday win against Mt. Zion.

The junior hurler threw six innings for the victory. He finished with two strikeouts and two walks. He limited Mt. Zion to five hits.

“Brock got the ground ball when he needed it,” Mt. Vernon coach Tim Holloway said. “We had a big double play there.”

Mt. Zion's only runs came in the fifth inning. Fulkerson allowed both walks in the inning after a single. But with runs on second and third, Fulkerson pitched his way out of any addition problems.

Mt. Vernon's leadoff hitter Matthew Williams pounded out four singles.

“Matt's shown the ability to scrap,” Holloway said. “He does whatever it takes to get on base. He did it last year and having that leadoff guy on is huge.”

The bottom of the Rams lineup did most of the damage outside of Williams.

With the Rams up 2-0 in the third, Clayton Reeves knocked an RBI double. Fulkerson followed with an RBI groundout to push the advantage to 4-0.

“We were fortunate to get that early lead, and guys kept adding on,” Holloway said.

The Mt. Vernon offense tacked on more runs in the fourth. Trevor Flota ripped a two-run single with two outs. The scores gave Mt. Vernon a 6-0 edge. After Mt. Zion pulled to within 6-2 in the fifth, the Rams struck again. This time Jake Pike and Reeves knocked RBI singles.

Both Pike and Reeves finished with two hits and two RBI each.

“Pike and Reeves are showing the ability to have quality at-bats pretty consistently,” Holloway said. “And then you add in their speed, they give us a nice option there.

“Those guys will compete, and I like their approach at the plate right now.”

Mt. Vernon is 6-2 this season and opens South Seven Conference play this afternoon against Belleville Althoff.

“Every day is the same, and our approach is the same,” Holloway said. “We feel like we if we take care of the process, the results will be there.”
