Breese Central drops Mt. Vernon

Kirsten McGowen knocks in goal for Lady Rams

A trio of first-half goals were enough for Breese Central to top the Lady Rams soccer team 3-1 Monday.

The two teams competed in windy, rainy conditions at Lincoln Park with temperatures in the 40s.

After seeing limited opportunities on the offensive end in the first half, Mt. Vernon's attack started finding its rhythm late in the game.

We had plenty of opportunities to tie or win this game,” Mt. Vernon coach Jim Duncan said. “We sure did. We had some great breakaways from Madalina (Overstreet). We finally got some through balls.”

Overstreet had several scoring chances in the second half, and they came in a variety of ways. She volleyed an attempt wide midway through the half. About four minutes later she tried to chip a shot over Central's goalie. The attempt also went just wide. With 11 minutes left in the game, Overstreet redirected a ball that forced the Central goalie to push the ball away from the goal for a save.

She's a big threat once we can get her past those back four,” Duncan said.

Mt. Vernon's lone goal of the game came early in the second half. Central's goalie saved a Mt. Vernon attempt. She then moved and dropped the ball before picking it back up. The handling violation gave the Lady Rams a free kick just a few yards from the Central goal. Numerous Lady Cougars ran back and lined themselves across the mouth of the goal to block the free kick from Kirsten McGowen. The Lady Rams senior powered a low shot that deflected through a player and into the net.

The Lady Cougars tallied a pair of goals in the opening half and added a late goal to take a 3-0 edge into halftime. The final Central goal came on a rebound with 2:35 left. Mt. Vernon goalie Amelia Quinn saved the initial shot, but Chelsey Deiters followed up the miss with the score.

Mt. Vernon travels to Marion on Wednesday.
