Lady Rams win on walk off

MT. VERNON — Rachel Wright sent the Lady Rams softball fans home happy Thursday.

With the game in the bottom of the seventh and tied at five against Althoff, Wright knocked a single. Her sister Hannah raced home for the winning run as Mt. Vernon claimed a 6-5 win.

We battled back in the bottom of the seventh, got two runs, and so a win is a win. That's the main thing,” Mt. Vernon coach Lance Boldt said. “I'm proud of the girls for battling back because it could have been really easy after that sixth inning to get down and stay down.”

Mt. Vernon started the bottom of the seventh down 5-4. Jazmine Hawkins opened the frame with a single. She scored on a booming triple off the bat of Hannah Wright. The game ended on Rachel Wright's base hit.

I'm proud of the girls for the way they finished off a game,” Boldt said. “We've been talking about competing, which we've been doing, but it's nice to compete and get the win at the end of the game and they did it.”

Malorie Garner started the Mt. Vernon offense and finished with three RBI.

She's hitting the ball hard and driving the ball well,” Boldt said. “We've got some girls in the lineup who are hitting the ball hard, making things happen.”

Mt. Vernon trailed early 2-0 before Garner hit a two-run triple to tie the game. She added a sacrifice fly to give the Lady Rams a 3-2 edge. Alexis Stewart made the score 4-2 with an RBI single. Althoff responded with three runs in the sixth to set the stage for the dramatic seventh inning.

Hannah Wright pitched a complete game for the Lady Rams, earning the victory. She improved her pitching record to 3-4 this season.

Mt. Vernon is 4-9 overall this season and 3-2 in South Seven Conference play.
