Herrin edges Mt. Vernon

MT. VERNON —

The Rams tennis team lost a close 5-4 match against Herrin on Thursday.

It was a really close match, and we had a chance certainly at the No. 3 singles and Dalton (McGowen) really played well,” Mt. Vernon coach Randy Knox said. “He was playing a really good player from Herrin.”

McGowen was involved in six sets of tennis for Mt. Vernon. His singles match two and a half hours. He ended with a third-set tiebreak loss 6-4, 5-7, 4-7. McGowen briefly rested before teaming with Austin Martin to win a three-set doubles match 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

Nathan Arnold helped the Rams score a pair of wins. Arnold won his singles match 7-5, 6-0. He later teamed with doubles partner Jared Hatton for a 6-3, 6-3 victory.

(Arnold) played the ball well, and he really hustled I'll say that for him,” Knox said. “He really ran down some balls that looked like they were past him or he wasn't going to be able to get to.”

Aiden Ezell was also a winner for Mt. Vernon in singles. He recorded a three-set victory 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Mt. Vernon is 5-3 this season and travels to Centralia on Monday.
