Lady Rams hold off Marion

MT. VERNON — The Lady Rams softball team avenged a bitter defeat from earlier in the week with a 10-7 victory over Marion on Thursday.

We had some big, big hits today,” Mt. Vernon coach Lance Boldt said. “We have some girls who are swinging the bat really well right now. We're a solid hitting team.”

The victory came two days after Mt. Vernon traveled to Marion and lost a four-run lead in the final inning.

We really rebounded well after the disappointing loss Tuesday,” Boldt said. “I'm just very proud of the girls.”

The Lady Rams fell in a quick 3-0 hole after the first inning, but Mt. Vernon struck back in its half of the first to tie the game.

That first inning to come back and score those three runs and get us right back in the ballgame, that was big,” Boldt said.

Mt. Vernon tacked on three more runs later to seize a 6-3 edge. Hannah Wright helped the Mt. Vernon cause by smacking a two-run triple to center field. With the extra-base hit, Wright tied the single season school triples mark. Casey Little also rocked a two-run triple against the left-field fence.

Marion chipped away at the Mt. Vernon lead several times clawing back to within a run three times. Marion was down 8-7 going into the bottom of the sixth when the Lady Rams added a pair insurance runs. Little pushed a run home after an RBI groundout. Lauren Wilson knocked a run in later with a single.

Those last two runs are really big,” Boldt said.

Hannah Wright finished with two hits, two walks and two RBI to lead the Lady Rams. She also pitched a complete game. Little added a pair of hits and three RBI. Wilson finished with three hits.

I'm just so proud of the girls,” Boldt said. “This is a big conference win for us. Marion is a great team.”

Mt. Vernon, as a team, drew six walks. Jazmine Hawkins and Hannah Wright combined for five of the free passes.

We made them work,” Boldt said.

Mt. Vernon is 7-12 overall this season and 4-3 in South Seven Conference play. The Lady Rams host Mt. Carmel at 3:30 p.m. today.
