Lady Trojans fall to ZRC

BLUFORD — Zeigler-Royalton/Christopher raced past Webber’s girls basketball team for a 77-41 win Thursday night.

ZRC used its pressure defense to force Webber into 28 turnovers in the game. The early extra possessions helped the Lady Tornadoes take a double-digit edge into the second quarter and build a 38-20 halftime lead.

“We came out so dead, so flat-footed on defense,” Webber coach Travis Pinkston said. “It wouldn’t matter what they ran. They would have scored on us.”

Despite the slow start, Webber’s offense matched ZRC basket for basket in the second quarter. Sarah Ganieany and Courtney Girvan both were able to score consistently around the basket for the Lady Trojans. Ganieany finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds to lead Webber.

“Coming in, you have to look at her if you’re playing us,” Pinkston said. “She’s a dominant force.”

Girvan added 10 points and five rebounds.

Webber whittled the deficit down to a dozen points at 24-12 after Erica Marlow scored with six minutes left in the first half. But the Lady Trojans could never get the ZRC lead back to single digits.

The Lady Tornadoes pushed their lead past 20 points after halftime and extended it to 30 points late in the third quarter.

“We ran up and down, and that’s not our game,” Pinkston said. “It wears us out. We played way too much into their hands tonight, and that caused us to have a lot more problems than what we should have.”

ZRC’s Autum Gunter led all scorers with 29 points. Brandy Mifflin finished with 20.

Webber is 6-10 this season.
