Mt. Vernon’s girls basketball team topped Carbondale 56-50 Thursday night.
Hannah Owens led the Lady Rams with 17 points. Claire Ryan added 11. Aaliyah Palmer and Kelby Kujawa were both in double digits with 10. Courtney Scarbrough finished with eight.
Carbondale started the game with a 9-2 run, but the Lady Rams finished the first quarter with a 12-11 lead and never trailed again. Mt. Vernon opened up a double-digit advantage in the third quarter before Carbondale closed the gap with a full-court press.
“It’s a big road win,” Mt. Vernon coach Jeff Lonnon said. “They’re all hard to play in the South Seven no matter what the records are.”
Mt. Vernon is 14-3 this season and 6-0 in the South Seven Conference. The Lady Rams travel to the Carbondale Tournament on Monday against DuQuoin.
