Hines Sight: Mid-winter basketball tournaments start this week

MT. VERNON — Another round of basketball tournaments starts this week in Southern Illinois.

Mt. Vernon’s boys team plays in the Salem Invitational Tournament starting Wednesday with an opening round game against Effingham. The two teams played three times last season with the Rams winning every game.

The Rams look to continue the success they had on Friday night against Carbondale. Mt. Vernon entered the conference matchup after playing in the Centralia Holiday Tournament and St. Anthony Shootout. Mt. Vernon lost three of four games on buzzer beaters. During the stretch the Rams struggled holding leads.

Against Carbondale, Mt. Vernon opened up a 14-point lead in the third quarter, absorbed a run from the Terriers and restored its cushion a minute later.

Trevor Flota and Braden Fitzjerrells provided consistent offense for the team. The two guards combined for 39 of the team’s 64 points. Michael Feezer added a post presence and ended with 13.

The win helped the Rams moved to within a game of Althoff and Cahokia for the South Seven Conference lead.

The Mt. Vernon girls team starts its tournament action tonight against DuQuoin in the Carbondale Invitational. The Lady Rams have rolled through their schedule with just three losses and are perfect in conference action.

The boys Midland Trail Conference Tournament also starts tonight. All three Jefferson County schools will host games before the tournament shifts to Louisville for the final rounds.

Webber plays a first-round game against Wayne City tonight. Woodlawn enters the tournament as the top seed and plays Tuesday night along with No. 3 seed Waltonville.
