MT. VERNON —
Five Rams wrestlers will compete today in the Mattoon sectional for a chance at the state final.
“They have just worked their tails off this week, and I’ve been really happy with the progress and just seeing their attitude,” Mt. Vernon wrestling coach Sean Docherty said. “That’s probably one of the biggest changes this week just really more focused.”
Quentin Favors (106 pounds), Chase Vosburgh (145), Alex Vosburgh (160), Tristan Penrod (195) and Justin Armstrong (285) all advanced out of the Carbondale regional a week ago and compete today. The top four wrestlers in each weight class qualify for the state final held in Champaign.
“We have a good mix of all the weight classes,” Docherty said. “We’ve got a lower weight, a couple middle weights. We’ve got two upper weight guys, which to me lets me know we’re doing things the right way, and we’re very competitive as a team. And these guys were the backbone of our team all year long.
“It was a shock whenever one of them lost because you’re not used to seeing them lose.”
Chase Vosburgh and Armstrong both won their weight classes at the regional. Vosburgh turned in a dominating match and won 8-1. Armstrong battled through four overtimes before being crowned champion with a 3-2 victory. Alex Vosburgh and Penrod both finished second, and Favors advanced from the regional after placing third.
