Five Rams advance to wrestling sectional

Mt. Vernon places sixth as a team

By Paul Hines

Mt. Vernon claimed three championship and five wrestlers advance to sectional after Saturday's regional action.

That's a pretty big accomplishment for our regional,” Mt. Vernon coach Sean Docherty said. “It was an extremely tough one and just getting that many kids out and having three champions I thought was pretty nice.”

Quentin Favors (120 pounds), Chase Vosburgh (152) and Tristan Penrod (220) were all crowned regional champions in their weight classes. Josiah Fitzgerrells (113) and Alex Hopkins (195) finished third and advanced. The top three finishers in each weight class qualify for sectional. Kalen Roberts is available as an alternate after placing fourth at 106 pounds.

Mt. Vernon placed sixth overall as a team with 106.5 points. Taylorville claimed the team title with 198 points.

Roberts (106) entered his elimination third-place match and faced Marion's Elijah Hale. The Marion wrestlers won 7-2.

Fitzgerrells (113) won his third-place match 8-3 against Taylorville's Will Cruikshank.

He's just been a hard-nosed kid and a great worker for us and a great student of the sport the last two years,” Docherty said.

Favors (120) won his title match 5-0 against Charleston's Zac Lawyer 5-0.

He was going to war every match, every minute he was out there,” Docherty said.

Vosburgh (152) was victorious 19-6 on a major decision against Carbondale's Russell Leonard. Vosburgh is now 38-2 this season.

For Chase to go in and dominate (Leonard), says a lot about what Chase has been doing to get ready for this season,” Docherty said.

Hopkins (195) beat Mattoon's Chase Rogers with a fall with 15 seconds left in the match.

I thought he rose to the challenge,” Docherty said.

Penrod (220) was victorious 8-5 over Taylorville's Kyle Tex.

I think Tristan was a little apprehensive at first, kind of feeling him out, but once he felt confident he could compete with him he let it all hang out.”

The Mt. Vernon wrestlers will compete Friday and Saturday at the Chatham Glenwood sectional.
