Lady Rams clinch share of South Seven

Mt. Vernon's girls basketball team traveled to Cahokia and rallied to win 52-50 Tuesday night.

The victory gives the Lady Rams at least a share of the South Seven Conference title. Mt. Vernon finished the conference schedule at 9-1 for the second straight year. Carbondale has just one loss in the league as well. The Lady Terriers were in action Tuesday night and also face Cahokia to finish their South Seven slate. A loss would give Mt. Vernon a second consecutive outright title.

The kids are very excited,” Mt. Vernon coach Jeff Lonnon said. “They worked very hard for that, and they had their back against the wall tonight all night long.

I think we won that game on pure heart.”

Mt. Vernon rallied from a 12-point deficit in the final quarter to claim the win.

Hannah Owens led Mt. Vernon with 17 points against Cahokia. Other scorers were: Courtney Scarbrough 14, Ieisha Sanders 13, Clare Ryan six and Miriam Hester two.

Mt. Vernon is 14-8 overall this season and finishes the regular season with a road game against Herrin on Thursday night.
