Lady Cards fall in regional

Galatia-Thompsonville wins in overtime

WAYNE CITY —

Woodlawn rallied to force overtime in Wednesday's 1A regional semifinal against Galatia-Thompsonville but lost 59-55 in overtime.

I couldn't be any more proud of the effort we gave,” Woodlawn coach Matt Patterson said. “We were down seven and struggling and really came out and gave a good effort in that second half.”

Woodlawn trailed 39-36 going into the final quarter. The Lady Cardinals held the Lady Cats scoreless for six minutes to take a slim advantage. Taytum Murdock hit a free throw and added a 3-pointer to give Woodlawn a 40-39 lead.

Woodlawn clung to its advantage until late in the final period. With less than a minute to go in the game, Murdock added another free throw to put Woodlawn up 46-42.

That little run there, holding them scoreless really gave us a chance,” Patterson said.

The game stayed close until the final seconds. Galatia took possession of the ball down two. It ended up in Elizabeth Sloan's hands as the final seconds ticked down. Sloan banked in a shot to send the game into overtime.

Woodlawn opened the extra session with a 3-pointer from Murdock, but Galatia battled back.

With the game tied, Galatia's Emily Reed canned a long-range shot to give the Lady Cats a 57-54 edge. Woodlawn never got closer.

After a close opening period, Galatia took control in the second and claimed a 24-17 halftime edge. The Lady Cats pushed the advantage to double figures in the third quarter.

Allison England led Woodlawn with 17 points, and Murdock added 11.

Woodlawn struggled from the free throw line in the game, hitting 18 of 35 attempts.

We had tons of chances in that fourth quarter,” Patterson said. “And some of it was fatigue. We played so hard to get back in and kind of get ahead.”
