MT. VERNON —

A blend of fun and fundamentals was on display as Jared Shaner's youth football camp ended Thursday.

I'm just really happy with all the kids, kindergarten through eighth grade have come out, and I hope had some fun this week and learned a little football and played and had a good time,” the Mt. Vernon football coach said.

Shaner said his approach to the summer camp is a mix of just having a little bit of fun with some of the younger campers and trying to blend in some football fundamentals with the older athletes.

I think with the younger group, it's more just about having fun,” he said. “We have our coaches and some of our high school kids out here running the stations and the drills. And that's the biggest thing I tried to stress to them.

Ultimately we want them to get in the car on Thursday afternoon and say, 'I want to do that again next year.'”

The camp, which opened Tuesday, consisted of two sessions with younger kids in action during the morning hours. The older age group met in the afternoon. Shaner said he had about 40 children in the morning sessions and about 20 for the afternoon. The youngsters represent the future of the Rams football program.

My last job, I was there long enough where you got to watch kids who came through camp and then come to you through your youth program and then on into high school,” Shaner said. “That's pretty neat just to watch kids develop.”

The camp included a punt, pass, kick competition. Each child took a pair of turns in each area trying for the longest throw or boot in the event. Winners were: Tyler Shaner (kindergarten-second grades), Calan Kujawa (third and fourth), Blake Dees (fifth and sixth) and Darnell Disroe (seventh and eighth).
