MT. VERNON — The Post 141 Junior Legion squad beat Bluford Post 1193 in a doubleheader Wednesday.
Mt. Vernon claimed the opener 12-2 in five innings and was victorious 10-4 in the second matchup.
“We had good pitching all day long,” Mt. Vernon coach Brian McPherson said. “We never really got into too much trouble. The first game we hit the ball well the whole game.”
Mt. Vernon jumped out to a big cushion in the opening game. Post 141 scored five times in the opening two frames to claim a commanding lead. Post 141 padded their lead and ended the game in the fifth with four runs.
Up 9-2 and the bases loaded, the trio of Jake Wylie, Dalton Banach and Sean Scott all walked to force in runs.
Both teams battled for control in the second game before Mt. Vernon broke it open late with five runs in the seventh inning.
“I thought we came out the second game, and we competed a lot better,” Bluford coach Sam Root said. “It got away in the seventh, but we're trying to look at the bigger picture.”
Scott jump-started the Mt. Vernon offense with a two-run single in the opening inning.
Bluford got a run back in its half of the first when Dylan Burrell scored on an error. Mark Knepler evened the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third with an RBI hit.
Mt. Vernon and Bluford traded the advantage in the middle innings. Post 141 seized a one-run edge in the fifth when Gage Burroughs knocked an RBI triple to make the score 3-2. Bluford countered in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of scores of their own. Dalton Hart knocked an RBI single to right that tied the game. Garrett Thompson gave Post 1193 the lead at 4-3 with a base hit to left field.
