MT. VERNON — Althoff's boys tennis team swept past the Rams 7-0 in a rain-shortened match Thursday.
Althoff won all six of the singles matches and completed one victory in doubles before rain ended the competition early.
“We needed to definitely get some practice in and some match play since we've been rained out a couple days this week,” Mt. Vernon coach Randy Knox said. “Overall I thought we played pretty good. They were just on a different level. That's probably the best team they've ever had.”
Mt. Vernon lost each match in straight sets. Jared Hatton was able to win several games at No. 2 singles for Mt. Vernon. He lost 6-2, 6-1. Dalton McGowen also avoided being blanked. He was defeated 6-1, 6-1.
“We won a few games here and there,” Knox said. “We competed well, they were just better.”
McGowen and Austin Martin paired together for Mt. Vernon in the one completed doubles match. The Rams duo lost 6-2, 6-1.
Mt. Vernon is 5-7 this season and travels to Marion for the South Seven Conference meet on Saturday.
“Althoff is the favorite going into that, and Carbondale is the team that would give them the most competition,” Knox said.
