All-state pitcher signs with RLC

Fulkerson led Rams with 11 wins

The Rams top returning pitcher signed with Rend Lake College on Wednesday evening.

Brock Fulkerson led Mt. Vernon's baseball team with 11 wins a season ago. The Rams cracked the 30-win mark as a team and placed fourth at the 3A state final.

The season we had last year was really remarkable, and let's hope that transforms into this year too,” Fulkerson said.

Fulkerson said the college suited him well and can also prepare him for the future.

That was one of the main factors too,” Fulkerson said. “They definitely send a lot of people on to the higher level, and that's something I've always wanted to do, and (coach) Tony (Etnier) does a good job of that.”

Mt. Vernon coach Tim Holloway added that he's seen Fulkerson improve throughout his career. The hurler has bulked up and added velocity to his fastball in the past year.

He's gotten better as he's gone along, and I think that he's got a lot ahead of him as well,” Holloway said. “He's a late bloomer. He's only going to get better. He added 15 pounds this year, and I think that his future is bright."

Not only will Fulkerson be close to Mt. Vernon by making the short trip to Rend Lake, which is located in Ina, he will join several former Rams teammates when he competes for the Warriors.

In addition to the 11 wins, Fulkerson threw 89 and a third innings on the mound his junior season. He finished the year with a 1.96 earned run average. His year culminated with being named to the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association 3A all-state team. He also shared the South Seven Conference Player of the Year award with teammate Landon Thomas. Fulkerson said having those accolades attached to his name doesn't mean there is added stress for his final season.

I love it. I love it,” Fulkerson said. “Of course it kind of puts a target on my back.

I'm fine with it.”
