Vosburgh, Penrod advance to state

By Paul Hines

CHATHAM — A pair of Mt. Vernon wrestlers advanced to the state finals on Saturday.

Chase Vosburgh won the 152-pound weight class the Chatham Glenwood sectional, and Tristan Penrod also moved on with a second-place finish in 220 pounds.

It's always nice to have wrestlers that have dedicated a lot of time and effort and energy into this sport, and it really shows,” Mt. Vernon coach Sean Docherty said. “If you just come to the practices and don't do anything outside of practice it's going to be pretty hard to qualify for the state tournament and to do well.

They both wrestle almost year round.”

Vosburgh won his championship with a second-period pin against Herrin's Chris Ward. This will be his third straight trip to state. Champaign Central's Toby Rivera edged Penrod 3-1 in their title match. Penrod will compete at state for the first time.

Josiah Fitzgerrells (113 pounds), Quentin Favors (120) and Alex Hopkins (195) all competed in the sectional but were eliminated. Fitzgerrells and Hopkins both lost their opening two matches. Favors was a victory away from qualifying for state but lost in the semifinal of the wrestleback bracket.

He just gave it everything he had all weekend,” Docherty said. “(I) hated to see him lose that last match. As a coach, you start looking at all the ramifications of that.”

The 2A state finals start on Thursday.
