Lady Rams stay perfect in duels

By Paul Hines

MT. VERNON — The Lady Rams tennis team remains unbeaten in duel matches after a 9-0 Wednesday win over Highland.

I'm very pleased overall with how we played in this one and thought we played well against a talented Highland team,” Mt. Vernon coach Randy Knox said.

Mt. Vernon started with a sweep in the singles matches.

Catie Raney started again in the No. 1 position for the injured Jade Knox. The freshman won 6-0, 6-0.

She really has played well,” Knox said of Raney. “I think it was good for her playing down at No. 2 early in the season. I think her confidence is up now and feels like she can move up to that No. 1 position and play well for us. She really has done that the last two matches.”

Shubhika Jain won at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-3. Gauri Kaushal also won in two sets after rallying in the second. She won 6-3, 7-6 and trailed 4-0 in the latter set before completing the comeback.

She showed a lot of determination when she could have given up,” Knox said.

Amanda Scott won at No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-1. Liz Hurst was victorious in three sets 7-6, 2-6, 7-5. Abigail Winkler ended the singles sweep with a 6-0, 6-1 win.

In doubles Scott and Winkler won 10-5. Jain and Hurst were also victorious 10-0.

(Jain and Hurst) play together real well together in the No. 3 doubles position and compliment each other real well,” Knox said.

The match ended with the No. 1 doubles team of Raney and Kaushal. The duo was down 10-9 but forced a tiebreaker and won the match 11-10 (10-4).

Mt. Vernon improved to 9-0 in duel matches. The Lady Rams travel to Salem today before hosting the Mt. Vernon double invitational Saturday.

That should be a fun tournament for us,” Knox said.

The Lady Rams will be joined by team from Teutopolis, Carbondale, Salem and Marion in the Saturday event.
