Capps commits to Rend Lake

WOODLAWN – The top scorer in Lady Cardinals basketball history is headed to Rend Lake College.

“To get the scholarship for Rend Lake is a huge thing,” Woodlawn coach Trisha Draege said. “I'm excited for her to continue to keep playing. She's put in a lot of work so she deserves this.”

Alexa Capps signed with the college on Monday at her high school. Capps broke the scoring record near the start of her senior season and finished with 1,988 career points.

“In a million years, I never would have thought that I would have been it, but now that I have it, it's awesome,” Capps said. “Maybe one year someone will beat me, and that will be even greater for them because they'll be pushing 2,000 (points).”

Early in the high school season, Capps considered ending her career after her senior year. It was a decision she eventually decided to reconsider.

“I just realized I would miss it if I didn't (play in college),” Capps said. “And I started going to more Rend Lake games and realizing the difference there was from high school to college.”

Capps said she relishes the increase in skill level and new challenges she will face in college.

After playing on teams that won back-to-back regional titles, Capps found herself playing a different role this season as one of the few experienced players in Draege's first season as coach. The Lady Cardinals finished the year 6-20 and lost in the opening round of the regional.

“It was just our building season, and it was hard,” Capps said. “We didn't win a lot of games. It was very stressful a little bit and frustrating at times, but we got through it and I've learned a lot from it.”

Capps led the team in nearly every statistical category. She averaged about 23 points a game. She added six rebounds and four assists a game. Her quickness and defensive prowess led to three steals a game.

“Undoubtedly we relied on her on the court for everything possible,” Draege said. “Rebounding, she led our team in rebounding.

“She did a little bit of everything for us.”
