Big inning beats Mascoutah

MT. VERNON – The Rams baseball team scored six times in the third and beat Mascoutah 9-5 Tuesday.

Jake Pike and Landon Thomas started the third inning rally with bunt singles.

“It led to a huge inning,” Mt. Vernon baseball coach Tim Holloway said. “We're able to put pressure on them, a couple times on their third baseman. We started getting some good pitches to hit after that.”

Collin Young loaded the bases with a walk.

Colten Meador cleared the bases with a three-run double. Trevor Flota followed with an RBI single. Sawyer Harrison finished the inning with an RBI triple to put the Rams ahead 6-0. All the damage came with two outs.

Mt. Vernon added to its lead in the fourth when Hayden Poninski doubled and scored on a passed ball to put the Rams up 7-0.

“I thought we did a good job finding ways to get guys in, and we were aggressive. We only struck out twice,” Holloway said.

Brock Fulkerson pitched five innings for the win. Thomas Weber threw the final two frames. He pitched his way out of a first and third jam in the seventh.

“You never know what can happen,” Holloway said. “That is a good ballclub, and I thought Brock did a good job in his start, and I also thought Thomas Weber did a good job in relief.”

Mt. Vernon is 12-5 this season and travels to Marion's Rent One Park to play Harrisburg today.
