Hines Sight: High school sports on the horizon

MT. VERNON —

August always marks one of those transition times in the annual sports calendar.

It's officially time to start counting down the days until high school sports are back in action. As far as I'm concern, the summer is about exhausted.

It should be an interesting time across Jefferson County as teams start gearing up for the fall. And fans won't be short on storylines.

Mt. Vernon's football team has been working through the heat of the summer. Anyone who's driven past the practice field over the last few weeks has probably witnessed players logging some diligent practice and conditioning hours.

The Rams went winless a season ago. This year Mt. Vernon kicks off the regular season a bit later than the past two. The calendar has been shifted back a week with Mt. Vernon's opener coming Friday, Aug. 30. The Rams have a stout test against three-time defending champion Rochester.

The Rams program could get a solid boost from its incoming sophomore class along with a contingent of returning veterans. A season ago the incoming sophomores ripped off a 9-0 season that concluded with a 52-0 rout of Highland. It was the first perfect season from a Mt. Vernon freshman football team since 2006.

Mt. Vernon's volleyball squad will look to keep its winning ways going. The Lady Rams reached the 16-win plateau a season ago. The group had a solid core of seniors, but several key contributors will be back this season.

The Rams golf team had a pair of state finalists a season ago in Trevor Flota and Mathew Williams. Mt. Vernon will have the challenging task of replacing numerous seniors from its varsity lineup.

Woodlawn looks to remain strong on the volleyball court. The Lady Cardinals finished with a regional championship and a berth in the sectional. They ended the year with 19 wins.
