Sports Roundup: Lady Rams tennis team edges Mt. Carmel on Senior Night

MT. VERNON — Mt. Vernon’s girls tennis team rallied past Mt. Carmel 5-4 on Thursday.

The match was the team’s Senior Night, and the Lady Rams improved to 9-3 this season.

The match came down to No. 3 doubles where Mt. Vernon’s team of Kayla Burk and Liz Hurst won in three sets — 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. Burk and Hurst lost the first match and trailed 5-1 in the second before rallying for the win.

“That was one of the best comebacks I’ve seen with the match on the line,” Mt. Vernon coach Randy Knox said. “Kayla and Liz refused to give up, and I’m proud of them.

In singles, Jade Knox won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2. Guari Kaushal won at No. 5 singles 6-3, 7-5. Hurst won her singles matchup 6-1, 6-2. Marisa Uhls lost at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-1. Katie Wall lost 6-2, 6-3. Burk lost 6-2, 6-3.

In addition to the No. 3 doubles team, the No. 2 duo of Knox and Kaushal won 6-3, 6-1. The No. 1 team of Uhls and Wall lost 6-0, 6-1.

Mt. Vernon travels to Carbondale for the South Seven Conference meet Saturday.

Brandon Rios of Casey finished seventh in a time of 8:08 in the varsity boys race.

Eli Badger was 16th in a time of 8:43. Fisher Overstreet was 31st in a time of 9:22, and Dylan Hayes was 47th in a time of 10:06.

In the girls race, Dollie Walker of Casey was 30th in a time of 10:49. Cheyanne McGrath was 34th in a time of 11:21. Sylera Jackson was 38th in a time of 11:34. Grace Metu was 39th in a time of 11:40.
