Waltonville starts season with Christopher title

CHRISTOPHER — Waltonville’s boys basketball team swept through the Christopher Turkey Tournament.

The Spartans ended their championship run Saturday with a 57-49 win against Egyptian in the final.

“As the game went on, I felt like we settled in and really controlled the tempo and were more patient and got good looks,” Waltonville coach Brian Gamber said. “That was the difference.”

Jordan Hale led the team with 24 points, and Trey Witges finished with 21. Both players were named to the all-tournament team.

“Those two guys are seniors, have played a lot of varsity basketball,” Gamber said. “They have a lot of varsity points. They know that when the game’s on the line they’re going to have the ball in their hands.

“In close games, those guys have really stepped up.”

Gamber added that several other players contributed to his team’s title run.

“Defensively, Matt Rogers was on the best player every single game, did a wonderful job on the boards,” Gamber said.

Waltonville started the tournament with a win against Cobden. The Spartans defeated the host team Christopher to set up Saturday’s final against Egyptian.

“Hopefully that pushed us in the right direction,” Gamber said. “Hopefully that gives us a lot of momentum as we start conference season.”

Waltonville is 3-0 this season and hosts Noble on Tuesday.
