Lady Rams knock off Cahokia

CAHOKIA — Mt. Vernon’s girls basketball team opened its conference season with a 49-42 win at Cahokia on Monday night.

Haley Lockhart led Mt. Vernon with 22 points. Claire Ryan was also in double figures with 13.

Aaliyah Palmer added six. Hannah Owens and Kelby Kujawa both finished with four points each.

The Lady Rams overcame some poor shooting in the first half to beat the Lady Comanches.

“It wasn’t a pretty game,” Mt. Vernon coach Jeff Lonnon said. “It doesn’t seem like we ever play a pretty game at Cahokia. But we’re not going to say we’re sorry for winning either. The kids did what they had to do.”

The win was Lonnon’s 200th of his head coaching career. He was a head coach previously at Anna-Jonesboro, Edwards County and Benton before coming to Mt. Vernon.

“You have to have good players to have good numbers as a coach,” Lonnon said.

Mt. Vernon is 4-1 overall this season and 1-0 in the South Seven Conference. The Lady Rams host Effingham St. Anthony on Thursday.
