Okawville races past Lady Cardinals

WOODLAWN — Okawville used a big second quarter run to race past the Lady Cardinals 70-29 Thursday night.

“They’ve always been an offensively strong team so our focus was on defense tonight,” Woodlawn coach Trisha Draege said. “First half, I was pretty pleased with it, especially the first quarter. The second half we came out, weren’t as strong.”

Okawville took a 19-10 lead into the second quarter before the Lady Rockets opened up a comfortable margin ahead of halftime. The Lady Rockets scored the opening 16 points of the period to take a 34-10 edge with three minutes left in the half.

Alexa Capps broke the drought with a bucket with 2:10 remaining in the half. Capps led the Lady Cardinals with 23 points. Capps scored the final seven points of the half for Woodlawn. The rest of the team combined for six points in the game.

“I think the other girls try to step up and help her out as much as they can, but when we lack that quickness that experience that’s costly against a team like this that’s really well rounded,” Draege said.

The Lady Rockets hurt Woodlawn with consistent outside shooting. Megan Wienstroer led all scorers with 30 points for the Lady Rockets. She hit six 3-pointers in the game. Jolyn Lake added a trio of 3-pointers.

“It’s hard to guard when they’re a threat out at the perimeter, but they’re also a threat inside,” Draege said. “They’ve got a lot of size on us. They’ve got quickness on us.

“They hit a lot of threes, a lot of open shots. They did really well.”

Okawville opened up a 20-point lead early in the third quarter. The advantage ballooned to 30 late in the third. The Lady Cardinals struggled on offense in the second half and scored just a dozen points.

“We’re going to have to be more offensively aggressive,” Draege said. “Okawville did a good job tonight. They’re a good team.”

Makaila Ballard led Woodlawn with nine rebounds.

Woodlawn is 3-11 overall this season.
