Lady Cardinals cruise

Crush South Central 58-30

WOODLAWN —

The Lady Cardinals were starving for outside shooting, and Allison England provided it early against South Central.

England knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the opening quarter in Woodlawn's 58-30 rout of the Lady Cougars on Monday night. England finished the quarter with eight points. Woodlawn as a team hit four 3-pointers in the opening half of action.

I don't know if we're that good of a shooting team, but that's a little more indicative of what we can do,” Woodlawn coach Matt Patterson said. “So hopefully that carries on.”

Woodlawn finished the game with five players in double figures. England and Carly Etheridge led the team with 11 points each. Lexy Knox, Kerstie Harlow and Taytum Murdock each added 10.

Behind England's hot shooting, the Lady Cardinals roared to an 18-4 start in the opening quarter. Woodlawn maintained a big lead throughout the game.

(The offense) seemed really contagious,” Patterson said. “Allison came out and got really hot early and knocked some down. And we fed off that.”

Carly Etheridge caught fire in the second quarter. She knocked down a pair of jumpers in the paint before she hit a free throw to give the Lady Cardinals a 28-12 edge.

Abby Hahn led South Central with 16 points, but the Lady Cougars struggled to control the basketball. South Central turned the ball over 15 times in the opening half and finished with 20 in the game.

We worked a little bit and forced a couple turnovers and some bad passes, but mainly we settled into what we were used to doing and trying to guard,” Patterson said. “Turning them over gives us extra possessions and extra shots and that's always helpful.”

The Lady Cardinals padded their lead in the second half. Etheridge put Woodlawn up 39-18 with a pair of free throws midway through the third quarter.

The margin stayed around 20 points throughout the final quarter until Woodlawn pushed the advantage near 30 to end the game.

Woodlawn is 3-6 this season and travels to Okawville on Thursday.
