MT. VERNON —

The Lady Rams used late offense to beat Waltonville/Sesser-Valier 9-4 Monday evening.

We got down 3-0 early, and I thought the girls unlike the first four games we really battled back, and we competed the whole game,” Mt. Vernon coach Lance Boldt said.

Mt. Vernon trailed 3-2 in the fifth before the offense took control. The Lady Rams cranked out four runs on four hits in the inning to take a commanding 6-3 edge.

The Lady Rams tacked on three more scores in the sixth.

Jazmine Hawkins led the Mt. Vernon offense with three hits and three RBI. Rachel Wright added two hits and three RBI. Hannah Wright finished with two hits and two walks.

We're really hitting the ball hard since it's gotten warmer,” Boldt said. “We made things happen. That was the best thing about it.”

Casey Little pitched a complete game for Mt. Vernon, and pitched out of a jam in the fifth inning to keep Mt. Vernon within a run at 3-2. The Lady Spartans' Gretchen Witter drew a one-out walk that loaded the bases. Little fanned the next two batters to end the threat.

I felt like that really jumpstarted us and got us pretty excited,” Boldt said. “Casey really did a good job all night really establishing her fastball, her change up. She used that a lot.”

Mt. Vernon came to the plate and ripped off four runs after the clutch pitching from Little.

Alexis Stewart started the rally with a one-out single. Lauren Wilson knocked her home with a bloop triple to short right field. Rachel Wright followed with an RBI double. Hawkins finished the surge with a two-run single to put Mt. Vernon up 6-3.

It seems like it just escalates, and we're just defensively struggling right now,” WSV coach Scott Haley said.

WSV started the game strong. The Lady Spartans scored three times in the opening inning.

Jaylin Haley opening the scoring with an RBI groundout. Gretchen Witter added an RBI triple. Delany Bandy ended the scoring with an RBI groundout to make the score 3-0.

After the opening inning, WSV struggled to get key hits with runners on.

We hit the ball a little bit today,” Haley said. “We just couldn't get anything strung together.”

Gretchen Witter had two hits a walk and an RBI to lead the Lady Spartans.

Mt. Vernon is 1-4 this season and travels to Carmi today. WSV is 1-6 and hosts Herrin.
